Colorado Association of Libraries.

To all you folks who think librarians are just people who really like books and quietude, guess again. Hidden away in your public libraries and in your schools are warriors for freedom of speech and open mindedness. Your librarians are on the front lines fighting for YOUR right to read anything you want, learn anything you want, and write anything you want. While I was at the conference I heard so many librarians telling stories about how some angry parent came into the library brandishing a book they thought was wrong for their kid. Sometimes they even want that book ripped from the shelves so that, not only will their child be kept safe from the dangerous knowledge therein, but so will everyone else's kid. The only thing standing between these folks and total literary genocide is your friendly neighborhood librarian.

Please take a moment to thank your lucky stars that you live in an age, and in a country, where such defenders of literature and free thinking exist. The next time you're reading a 'naughty' book, say a little prayer for the librarian who checked it out to you. I can almost guarantee that he/she had to go to war with someone so that you could.
